Біографія

Мартін Гарднер народився і виріс в околицях Талса, Оклахома, США. Він відвідував коледж при Університеті Чикаго, де він отримав ступінь бакалавра філософії. Під час Другої світової війни він кілька років служив у ВМФ США в якості йеомена (корабельний секретар) на борту ескортного міноносця USS Pope (DE-134) в Атлантичному океані. Його корабель знаходився в океані в момент закінчення війни і капітуляції Японії в серпні 1945 року.

Після війни Гарднер знову відвідував коледж при чиказькому університеті. Протягом року він також навчався в аспірантурі, але так і не захистив наступну ступінь.

Протягом декількох десятиліть Мартін зі своєю дружиною Шарлоттою і двома синами жив у Гастінгсі-на-Гудзоні (англ.), заробляючи на життя літературною працею, публікуючи свої книги в ряді видавництв, і пишучи сотні статей для різних журналів і газет. У 2002 році Мартін Гарднер повернувся в Норман (Оклахома), де його син, Джеймс Гарднер, працював професором педагогіки в університеті Оклахоми (англ.).

Був ведучим рубрики математичних ігор і розваг журналу «Scientific American», в якій була презентована широкій громадськості гра «Життя», винайдена Джоном Конвеем, а також багато інших цікавих ігор, завдання, головоломки.
