Томас Уолкер Хорсфілд: біографія

Хорсфілд народився в 1773 році у Філадельфії в американському штаті Пенсільванія і вивчав там медицину. Він працював багато років лікарем на острові Ява. Британська Ост-Індська компанія прийняла контроль над цим островом у Нідерландів, і Хорсфілд почав збирати за дорученням свого друга сера Томаса Стемфорда Раффлза тварин і рослини. Через хворобу він змушений був залишити Яву в 1819 році і став доглядачем, потім куратором музею Ост-Індської компанії в Лондоні.

У 1826 році Хорсфілд виконував обов'язки директора Зоологічного товариства Лондона.

Наступні тварини носять у своєму науковому назві ім'я Хорсфілда: середньоазіатська черепаха (Testudo horsfieldii), індонезійські летяги (Iomys horsfieldii), коротконосі крилан Хорсфілда (Cynopterus horsfieldi) і малабарский дрізд (Myophonus horsfieldii).
