Біографія

У 1541 році відправився в Америку і відвідав Антильські острови, Гватемалу і західне узбережжя Південної Америки. Повернувся до Іспанії, а потім до Італії в 1551 році. Про його особисте життя нічого не відомо. Якщо виходити з його книги, то основною метою для нього в Новому Світі була торгівля, але з цим у нього були досить великі складності через обмеження торгівлі іноземцями в іспанських колоніях.

Твори

Його книгаHistoria del Mondo Nuovo, опублікована у Венеції в 1565 році, містить цікаві відомості (хоч і повні помилок та помилок про Мексиці і Перу) про відвіданих ним краях, саму ж книгу слід назвати сумнівною у питанні достовірності наведених фактів через ворожість автора, який писав іноді як розчарувався торговець і завжди як малоосвічена людина з вузьким кругозором. Ця книга присвячена Папі Пію IV. Так якБенцонівиступав проти політики Іспанії, то цим не забарилися скористатися супротивники Іспанії, швидко здійснивши переклади видання на інші мови. Книга була перевидана в 1572, переведена на французьку мову (Eustace Vignon, 1579). Найбільш повним виданням з коментарями є англійське видання «History of the New World by Girolamo Benzoni» (Hakluyt Society, London, 1857).
