Мелтон займає друге місце після Крістін Саттон за обсягом вкладу в «Енциклопедію Британіка». Він є автором 15 статей: Аум Сінрікьо, Гілка Давидова, Вікка, Ворота раю, Діти Бога, Євангелісти, Нью-ейдж, П'ятидесятники, Саєнтологія, Свідки Єгови, Кришнаїти, Храм народів, Християнська наука та Еканкар.
Джон Гордон Мелтон народився в Бірмінгемі, Алабама, в сім'ї Барнума Едгара Мелтон і Інез Паркер. У 1964 році він отримав ступінь бакалавра наук від Бірмінгемського південного коледжу, продовживши потім богословське навчання в Гарретской теологічної семінарії, де в 1968 році отримав ступінь магістра богослов'я. У 1966 році Мелтон одружився на Дороті Дадлі. Від цього шлюбу у нього народилася дочка. Шлюб закінчився розлученням в 1979 році. У 1968 році Мелтон був висвячений у старійшини Об'єднаної методистської церкви, де в даний час є єпископом. Він виконував обов'язки методистського пастора в селі Уянет, Іллінойс (1974-75), а потім у Еванстоні (1975-80).
У 1975 році Мелтон отримав докторський ступінь з історії та літератури в Північно-західному університеті в Чикаго. У своїй докторській дисертації він провів огляд 800 релігійних груп, що існували в той час у США.
